Fall will be arriving very soon, which means the temperatures are beginning to drop. As a homeowner, the comfort level within your home begins to gradually switch from cool to warm as it becomes colder outside. However, lucky for us, there is a checklist of things to do while preparing to enter the colder seasons. Here are some steps from the professionals at Springboro Heating & Cooling that you can take to ensure your AC equipment is shut down and safe for the colder season.
Servicing Pre-Existing Damage
Before transitioning to the winter, it’s always best to inspect your equipment and check for any pre-existing damages that require repair. If you let pre-existing damage sit during the cold winter months, it can cause the damage to worsen or even cause your AC to break down. If you find any signs of damage, call a professional to take a look and repair it as soon as possible.
Shutting Down Equipment
You might think it is as simple as turning off a switch on your thermostat to shut down your AC; however, there are multiple pieces of equipment that make up your AC. Thus, many parts and functions that need to be correctly shut down. Keep in mind, if all of your AC’s equipment is not entirely shut down, the condenser switch can be triggered to “on” in the case of a warm spell. In this case, it can cause ice to form in the winter, damaging your equipment. The simplest way to ensure all of your AC’s equipment is properly shut down is to locate the breaker and turn off the switch connected to your AC. Oftentimes, the breaker box can be found on the outside of the house. Just make sure to remember to turn the switch back when the temperature starts to get warm again.
Clean and Cover Equipment
Now that you have the power down, it is time to give your equipment some attention before saying goodbye for the season. First, grab a broom and start sweeping any debris, branches, leaves, and dirt that could be on or surrounding the area of your condenser. Next, take your garden hose, wash off your outdoor equipment, and give the condenser a couple of hours to completely dry. While your equipment dries off, examine your equipment for dirty filters that need to be replaced or any damages that need to be repaired. Lastly, cover your equipment for the season. To ensure your equipment is safe, it is best to use a waterproof cover. Covers can be purchased at most hardware stores.
