Top Causes of AC Failure

Let’s face the facts. If you are like the majority of homeowners, you really don’t give your air conditioner a great deal of consideration. But when it gets hot outside, we do expect it to keep us cool. At Springboro Heating & Cooling, we realize that A/Cs are frequently overlooked until they break down or need some sort of service. Such is why we are always here to help. After all, we rely on air conditioners ourselves in our own homes. If you are having problems with your air conditioner, we put together a list below of some of the more common things that could be going on.

Typical Reasons Why Air Conditioners Fail

Lack of regular maintenance

Regular, routine maintenance is crucial to your air conditioner’s lifespan, efficiency, and performance. Having a licensed technician come to your home will help identify possible problems before they become bigger problems. When performing annual maintenance, they usually clean your air conditioning coils and inspect your system. Forgetting to have your system maintained may also void any warranties from the A/C’s manufacturer.

Coil Freeze

Old air filters (which need to be changed regularly) or obstructed ductwork can create airflow issues in your system, which can lead to a frozen coil. Periodically cleaning or replacing your air filter and keeping your ductwork free and clean are two important rules to abide by to prevent getting a frozen coil.

Low Refrigerant

Air conditioner refrigerants are hazardous. As such, any leakage needs to be repaired and recharged by a licensed technician as soon as possible. When your refrigerant levels are inadequate, your air conditioner will not operate properly.

Compressor damage, fan blade issues, and electrical connection issues

If an A/C compressor goes bad, it is usually caused by an underlying issue that is creating stress on the system. These issues include dirty coils, low refrigerant levels, electrical issues, and more. This is another reason why annual maintenance is so important. Our technicians can identify worn out and damaged components before you find yourself in need of emergency repairs.

A defective circuit breaker or fuse issues

One of the initial things that you need to investigate if your air conditioner fails is your circuit breaker or its fuse. Be sure to give it 15 minutes to allow your air conditioner to cool off. Then, replace the fuse or reset the breaker and see if that’s the problem. If neither of these attempts solves the problem work, you could have tripped something called a “high-pressure limit switch.” In such cases, we strongly encourage homeowners to give us a call.

Defective thermostat

When your home’s thermostat begins to fail, your A/C often cycles off and on continuously — if it at all. In these sorts of cases, it’s usually time to consider a thermostat upgrade to a smart or programmable thermostat, which will pay for itself in energy savings.
