Dangers of Hiring an Unlicensed HVAC Contractor

Have you been looking into getting your heating or cooling system repaired or replaced? If you are, you know that it can be hard to know which contractors are credible. When your budget is tight, it can be tempting to lean towards hiring a cheaper unlicensed contractor, but the dangers are just simply not worth it. Rest assured because we at Springboro Heating & Cooling are most concerned about your safety and satisfaction, and are always willing to help. So we put together a list of dangers that you should be aware of when it comes to unlicensed HVAC contractors.

The Danger Is Real

Some of the worst dangers when hiring an unlicensed contractor are liability problems, bad workmanship, and safety hazards. All three dangers can leave you dissatisfied and unsafe in your home, with your pockets considerably lighter. So be sure to read the warning signs!

Warning Signs

There are two warning signs to consider when searching through HVAC companies. If you recognize either of these warning signs when looking into a certain contractor, then that’s a good reason to move on to other options.

Require Evidence

The most important warning sign is when a contractor refuses to provide evidence of their licensing. If a contractor avoids answering your questions, then chances are they are hiding something such as a lack of insurance. Additionally, insurance for HVAC companies is required by law in Ohio, so by hiring a contractor without insurance you are risking becoming involved in the lawful consequences. In the end it’s better and safer to make sure you are confident in your contractor’s licensing by requiring evidence of insurance.

But It’s So Cheap!

If you are tempted by the low rates of unlicensed contractors, you are not alone. When it comes to HVAC systems, things can get very expensive very quickly. But low prices can be a huge warning sign, especially if you are aware that the contractor isn’t licensed or insured. While it can be tempting to give into amazingly low prices, poor repairs can result in you paying much more out of your pocket to fix those problems. Remember whatever you are paying the contractor, the technicians will be paid a part of. So if that amount isn’t very much, then the technicians likely aren’t well trained and won’t do their jobs efficiently or effectively. So cheap for you means cheap for the contractor!
