As we prepare for the holiday season, we also prepare our homes to make them as comfortable as possible. So many things go into making sure a home is prepared for our families and guests to spend time together. After all your hard work, you don’t want to miss any symptoms your furnace has been trying to relay to you, then end up with a malfunctioning furnace during one of the most memorable times of the year. Luckily, at Springboro Heating & Cooling we care about you and your family! In order to make sure everything is running smoothly beforehand, here is a quick list of some common furnace issues:

Furnace Pilot Light Not Lit- If your furnace’s pilot light has gone out and you can’t get it lit, there should be instruction labels on your furnace. Read that first, then locate the pilot light and its components. Turn the pilot dial set to “off.” You will want to wait about five minutes to allow time for the gas to dissipate. Then turn the pilot dial to pilot. Hold the reset button down and raise a flame from your lighter next to the opening of the pilot light. Now, let go of the reset button. Your furnace should be lit and ready to go at this point.

Furnace is Blowing Cold Air- When your furnace isn’t blowing heat and the air is cold, the first thing you should inspect is the air filter. Dirty filters are often the culprit to furnace issues because they can restrict airflow and cause many problems. Try replacing it with a fresh air filter and see if that makes a difference. Another thing you can check is the pilot light which we just discussed. Make sure it didn’t go out. You can refer to the instructions above to see how to relight your pilot light.

Furnace Runs Continuously- A common issue between furnaces and thermostats is that when the thermostat’s fan setting is set to “on,” it causes the heating system to run constantly. If you are encountering this problem, check your thermostat and change it to “auto.” Then turn the temperature to a number that is lower than its current setting.

Furnace Beeping or Blinking LED Lights- Encountering blinking lights on your furnace? Just like you wouldn’t ignore a beeping smoke alarm, you don’t want to ignore your furnace if you hear it beeping. Beeping or blinking lights are indicators of some type of blockage or unlit pilot light. We highly recommend calling your experts at Springboro Heating & Cooling to get it looked at as soon as possible.

Furnace Making Sounds- Is your furnace making any type of popping, banging, buzzing, or humming noises? Your furnace is trying to tell you something is off. So what should you check for? Banging noises are good indicators that there could be loose panels on the furnace. These would need to be tightened. Popping noises could be related to ductwork which expands or contracts based on whether it has cold or warm air passing through it. Banging or rattling noises could be caused by any loose screws or overlooked debris surrounding the furnace area. For that reason, do a quick once over to make sure nothing is lying loosely around here.

These five issues are just a few examples of what might be going on with your furnace. There are still numerous things that could be causing underlying problems even after trying to figure out the root of the cause. In addition, there remain several other indicators that your furnace may be trying to communicate to you. So if you notice anything out of the usual, please don’t ignore these symptoms and risk your furnace going out this holiday season!
