If you own a furnace, chances are you’ve had to deal with a pilot light that has gone out. Perhaps that’s why you are here today. We know this can be frustrating, especially if it happens on a cold winter night – and let’s be honest; most of Ohio’s winter nights are cold. But as a matter of fact, relighting a furnace pilot light is actually a pretty easy process. It may sound a little daunting, yes, but with your Springboro Heating & Cooling by your side, this process can go that much easier for you. So, without further ado, here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get your furnace up and running again in no time.

HOW CAN I RELIGHT MY FURNACE’S PILOT?

Step 1: Start by looking for the pilot light assembly on your furnace. This is typically a small knoblike assembly near the bottom of the furnace. Depending on your furnace model, you may or may not need to remove a panel to gain access to the pilot light area. This panel is known as the burner cover.

Step 2: Next, before doing anything else, for safety reasons, you should turn off the gas supply to the furnace. This can be done by turning the knob or lever on the gas valve that supplies gas to the furnace. After that, be sure to power the furnace down completely as well by pressing the power switch that is generally located at the base of the furnace.

Step 3: This step is imperative, so it’s important not to skip it. Please, wait for at least five minutes for any gas that may have built up in the furnace to dissipate. This prevents any gas from igniting accidentally and causing a safety hazard. Otherwise, it could cause great damage to you, your family, and your home.

Step 4: Fourthly, pinpoint the pilot light assembly – it normally looks like a knob. Generally, you will find this to be a red or black button or knob near the pilot light assembly. So, it shouldn’t be too difficult to locate. It usually is labeled with the wording “pilot, reset, or on/off.”

Step 5: Now continue the relighting process by pressing on the pilot button or knob and then using a long-reaching lighter or a matchstick to light the pilot light. Once you have turned the knob to “pilot”, press and hold down the “reset” while you simultaneously bring the igniter lighter or matchstick close to the opening of the pilot light. As always, approach with caution. When you are near enough, the pilot flame should catch and light up.

Once you have seen the flame spark, release the “reset” button/knob, and watch the pilot light to make sure it stays lit. If the pilot light goes out, repeat the process until it stays lit. (Just don’t forget to enforce step number 3 if you must start the process all over again!)

Step 6: Once the pilot light is lit and stays lit, you can turn the gas supply back on to the furnace.

Step 7: Last but not least, if you did have to remove a burner cover, don’t forget to place that back on the furnace!

There you have it! Easy peasy! With these few simple steps, you can relight your furnace pilot light and get your furnace running once again. Just remember to always be cautious and follow the directions so as to ensure a safe and successful relighting process.
