I don’t know about you all, but I am over Ohio’s humidity, and if you prefer a chill breeze over the heat of summer, then you know the significance of maintaining a well-running A/C. It is beneficial to know what steps to take if we ever find our air conditioning unit is lacking. So, what do you do when your air conditioning is acting up or fails to function? First things first, do not panic. An insufficient A/C is indeed unfortunate, but it’s our job at Springboro Heating & Cooling to handle your air conditioning troubles; the last thing we want is for you to stress! However, it does benefit you to know the ins and outs of what to do when in this situation.

My Power Is Out; What Should I Do?

If your power goes out during Ohio’s sweltering summer months, you ought to know how to take care to maintain a comfortable body temperature while waiting for your home’s power to return. For starters, you can:

  • Stay hydrated! When you’re hot, you lose a fair amount of water through perspiring, so you must attempt to replenish it.
  • Eat cold foods; I mean, if your electricity is out, then they’re melting within your freezer anyway, so you might as well relish in a frozen snack to cool yourself down.
  • Wear cotton. Dress in the breathable material, aka the thinnest, loosest cotton clothes you have; your body will thank you.
  • Remove your socks and shoes.
  • Avoid snuggling up with one another, at least for extended periods. While this may seem insignificant, sharing body heat will not help you support you and your loved ones to keep cool, so keep that space when possible.
  • Wet a towel or sheet in cold water and position it on your body while you sleep. A cold and damp washcloth is my go-to for a swift cool down, and it works pretty well for me though temporary.
  • Another odd-sounding yet practical action is to rest on the floor; while not offering a comfy surface, especially when not carpeted, it can be cool to the touch and doesn’t trap heat the way your mattress will. Plus, heat moves upward; thus, the closer you are to the floor, the cooler you’ll be.
  • Restrict sunlight in your household by shutting curtains and blinds.
  • Keep windows shut for as long as you can.
  • Depending on how long you wait for your electricity to turn back on, you may have to open them up at some point. Try to conserve the drier air within your home for as long as feasible because the sun will warm up your home faster than the wind will cool it.

If you still can’t seem to defeat that heat during a power outage, then you should try taking the family swimming or travel somewhere with functioning electricity to cool off more effectively.

My A/C Is Out; What Should I Do?

If your A/C suddenly discontinues its intended function, there are some efforts you can take before reaching out to our HVAC specialists. To name a few:

  • Look to see if your thermostat is set to the wrong temperature, heating your home instead of cooling it.
  • Assess your vents for dirt, debris, and back-ups hindering adequate airflow.
  • Tidy up or replace your filter as needed. A dirty filter can increase utility bills and limit your A/C from operating correctly.
  • Investigate your electrical panel for a tripped breaker.
