When your A/C is running like it should be, it operates in cycles. If you’ve been paying attention to it, you might have even noticed this happening, even if you didn’t know why.
Typically, cycles run anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes at a time. When a cycle starts, the system will thrust on and it will continue running until it attains the temperature level you desire (this is also the temperature to which you’ve set your thermostat). Once it reaches that temperature, it will then shut off for a while.
However, if your air conditioner is constantly running and it isn’t cooling your home as it should be, you have a reason for legitimate concern. On top of it not cooling your residence, it is going to raise your energy consumption costs and put needless stress on your system which could shorten its lifespan. Not to mention our summers can get pretty hot here in Ohio and we all need our cool places of refuge from the heat.
If you have decided you’d like to troubleshoot the problem on your own before reaching out to an HVAC technician, we at Springboro Heating & Cooling put together the following list of the most prevalent causes of this problem, and what you can do to remedy the issue.
Most Common Reasons:
Blocked Up Air Filter
If your air conditioner is running non-stop and you realize it’s not actually cooling things off, the first step you should take is to have a look at the air filter.
If an A/C filter is clogged, it limits the airflow going into your residence. This can hinder your air conditioning system’s capacity and inhibit its ability to remove moisture in the air you breathe because inadequate airflow over the coils prevents it from removing humidity. As a result, your home will feel warmer and your system will run constantly.
Wrong Type of Air Filter
While we are talking about air filters, we should also mention that there is a possibility that your air filter might be too restrictive for your system. It might be the wrong type of filter. With a wide variety of air filters available these days, not all of them are designed to work with your specific system. It is entirely possible that the air filter you are using has a MERV rating that is too high. The acronym
MERV, which is short for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, is a rating system that runs from 1 to 16. The rating of the filter you use needs to match the one specific to your HVAC system. So be sure to find out the right MERV rating for your home’s system.
Leaking Air Duct
In order for the nice and cool, treated, air to reach you and all the rooms in your home, first, it must travel through your ductwork.
Over seasons of use, air ducts can get loose or they can lose insulation. Or, they might not have been sealed well in the first place. When this happens, it can lead to air leakage. When excess cool air escapes, it makes it hard for your A/C system to reach the level of temperature you desire. As such, if you feel the air ducts in your home are leaking, old or that they need to be checked, give us a call to schedule an inspection.
Low Levels of Refrigerant
Air conditioning systems need adequate levels of refrigerant to keep any home nice and cool. If your system lacks the refrigerant it needs, there is a good chance you might have a refrigerant leak in the coils. If you do, your system will not be able to keep your home cool. This is a common reason why a homeowner’s air conditioning system would run non-stop. While the A/C strives harder to cool your home, without adequate levels of refrigerant, it’ll just spin its wheels and run up your energy bills while shortening the lifespan of your precious system. Because refrigerant is hazardous to handle, we strongly encourage you to schedule an inspection with one of our HVAC technicians if you suspect this is the culprit.
