Machines are built to serve a purpose, and when they begin to malfunction they always give symptoms. The most obvious symptoms when it comes to heating systems are noises. While anyone, professional or not, can get a good idea of what is wrong with their furnace, it can be very helpful to know what to look for. That is why we at Springboro Heating & Cooling put together a list of common noises you can hear coming from your furnace, and what problems they point to. However, always remember that you should leave repairs up to a licensed and experienced professional!
Banging
Banging noises are perhaps the most common complaints that we hear when customers call with questions about their furnace. In addition, it can be the hardest noise when it comes to determining whether there is actually a problem with your furnace, or whether the banging noises are at a normal level. If your furnace makes subdued banging noises when it turns on, then you have nothing to worry about. On the other hand, if the banging persists or grows in intensity while the furnace is on, then you can assume there is a problem. There are two common possibilities when it comes to loud banging noises coming from your furnace: a faulty ignition system or over-pressurized air ducts. The first should be examined by a professional, but there are a couple different ways you can attempt to fix the second problem. You can try opening all of your air vents in your home and replacing your air filter and listen for any changes in the banging noises. If the banging goes away, then you’ve solved the problem!
Rattling
Unfortunately, your furnace is rattling, then you know there is most definitely a problem with your heating system. On one hand, a rattling noise can signal something as simple as a loose part. On the other hand, it can signal something more expensive, worrisome, and serious: a cracked heat exchanger. Since the heat exchanger is both extremely important for the functioning of your heating system and extremely expensive, you should contact a repair company immediately if you hear a persistent rattling sound. Unfortunately, heat exchanger repair can often cost just as much as buying a whole new furnace, so hope that it’s just a loose part! But as always, you’re better off safe than sorry so don’t hesitate to call and ask questions!
Squealing
The last noise we will mention today is a high-pitched squealing noise coming from your furnace. Usually, this noise signals a problem either with your furnace’s blower, and it can also signal that there is low air flow within your heating system. Both of these options can occasionally be fixed by checking and replacing your furnace’s air filter. If the noises go awat, then you know you’ve fixed the problem! If not, then make sure to call a professional to ask further questions or to schedule a repair.
