Why is My AC Freezing?

There are a variety of reasons why a homeowner’s air conditioning unit might be freezing up. To help you understand a few of these reasons, we at Springboro Heating & Cooling put the following together.

REASONS YOUR AIR CONDITIONER MIGHT BE FREEZING IN YOUR SPRINGBORO, OHIO, HOME

Because air conditioners require an adequate flow of air to keep the cooling coil warm, sometimes the flow of air (or the lack thereof) is the culprit behind this problem. As such, warmed air from a residence is required for the coil to remain cold and to maintain the temperature above the freezing point. Without this warm air, coils can freeze up before the condensed water is able to be drained out of the unit. Because bad air filters and closed-off air registers tend to hinder airflow, it is always a good idea to check the air filter and ensure the registers are free and that they’ve been opened up. This would be an easy fix.

However, freeze-up could also be created by excessively low refrigerant levels or abnormal fan operation. Usually, low refrigerant levels cause the coils to get too cold, and a broken fan stops air from moving properly.

Additionally, faulty thermostats and drainage issues are often causes of frequent freeze-ups. During the normal cooling process, an A/C unit compresses water vapor into a liquid form and it drains this liquid outdoors. When the coils are frozen, ice will create an obstruction in the drainage hole. If this is happening, the air conditioner will still run. However, it won’t properly cool the home as it should and it will expend a lot more electricity than normal, costing you more on energy bills. If you have an A/C unit in your window, you can utilize a hair-dryer to thaw the coil out. It is also a smart idea to inspect the drain pipe for possible blockages like debris and twigs. Be mindful that operating any air conditioner with frozen coils can cause some serious damage to its compressor. Because the compressor is typically the most valuable part of an air conditioning unit, it isn’t a repair or replacement that homeowners on a budget want to pay for. If you find yourself unable to repair a frozen coil issue yourself, it is always wise to get a certified technician for the job.
