Why isn’t my furnace keeping up this winter?

With Ohio’s winters getting as cold as they do, having a fully functional furnace isn’t some sort of luxury.

Having a furnace that can keep us warm when it’s cold outside is a necessity!

As a necessity, if your home heating equipment doesn’t seem to be doing the trick like it used to, if it’s having a hard time keeping up with the cold, we at Springboro Heating & Cooling, present the following list of things that could be causing the problem:

1) There’s a thermostat problem

If your home is colder than normal, it might be a problem with your thermostat. For starters, you need to check its source of power. Then, make sure the area surrounding the device is clean. You also want to clean up any cobwebs, dust or dirt that might have found its way inside the actual device, as it could mess with the electrical or mechanical functions. If you do decide to clean it, make sure you don’t get it wet. A soft brush that’s obviously clean will suffice.

If the thermostat is older or outdated, it might be time to consider an affordable replacement, as they are prone to breaking down and other problems. You might be surprised at how affordable today’s smart thermostats and programmable thermostats are nowadays. They look cool. They’re easy to install and you can control them with your smartphone.

2) Your furnace filter needs replaced

We cannot emphasize this enough. During the winter, homeowners need to make sure their furnace’s air filters are replaced frequently. You should be checking them every month. When they are old and dirty, it can wreak havoc on your system and your heating bills. In any case, new filters don’t cost much, and they enable your furnace to work like it should, providing plenty of airflow so your heating equipment can perform like it’s meant to.

3) You’re losing warm air

If your system isn’t keeping up, or if you feel there might be cold air coming in, you need to make sure you don’t have air leaks Air leaks and air drafts send heat (and hard earned cash) right out the window — or door.

This can make it harder and harder for your furnace to provide the heat you are paying for. If you suspect this is an issue or if you’re not sure about your insulation levels, you should do some checking around, or even call a professional if necessary.

Anytime  it comes to losing warm air, “usual suspects” include doorways, ductwork, windows, chimneys, pipes or anything else that is “penetrating” the structure of your home, (like dryer exhaust vents, spickets, etc). In any case, for future reference, these are all items we recommend doing before winter to winterize your residence.

4) The system hasn’t had maintenance

Seasonal maintenance, which includes HVAC tune ups, are vital to maintaining any HVAC system — to keep it running well for many years. Homeowners should have their heating equipment tuned up by HVAC professionals once a year at least. The same goes for cooling equipment, or air conditioning.
